Cockroach Aviators: Unveiling the Habits of American Roaches in Local Environments

Both male and female American cockroaches take to the skies when they reach adulthood. These winged insects commonly live outdoors, thriving in warm and damp areas such as flowerbeds and beneath mulch. Locally, they are colloquially referred to as ‘palmetto bugs,’ especially in regions where they make homes on trees. The sewer systems of many American cities also host these resilient creatures.

Seekers of Shelter and Sustenance

American cockroaches venture indoors in search of water and food. With the ability to easily slip under doors, they exploit damaged weather stripping, while basement windows and garages often serve as their common entry points. Once inside homes, they tend to gravitate towards bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and basements.

Diverse Palates

Outdoors, American cockroaches exhibit an eclectic diet, feasting on leaves, tiny wood particles, fungi, algae, and small insects. Indoors, they become resourceful foragers, exploring under appliances, within drains, and across kitchen cabinets and floors. Crumbs, food scraps, and spilled meals become their sustenance, with pet food left out overnight also on their menu.
